IMPACT
🧘‍♀️ Creating mindful experiences in daily life by transforming everyday activities into accessible meditation practices.
Brief
Mind Coffee Mobile App is designed to enhance the quality of life by incorporating mindfulness into daily routines. It offers a variety of practices including guided, walking meditations, and specialized eating and coffee meditations intended to practice while enjoying Mind Coffee’s exclusive menu picks.
INTRODUCTION
🍵 What is Mind Coffee?
Mind Coffee is a specialty coffee shop dedicated to spreading mental health awareness and creating a more comprehensive narrative for mental health. Their cafe is located in Northside Berkeley!
Location: 1816 Euclid Ave, Berkeley, CA 94709
CLIENT
☁️ A Mind Coffee Story
Our Client’s goal was to create an app to give back to the community and spread mental health awareness. She aims for this app to serve as a resource that will foster our personal growth to “Rewrite the mental health narrative”. Target audiences are of all age groups, specifically those who live around the Berkeley area. Like her cafe environment, she wants users to feel safe and sound in a mentally healthy space.
Identifying the Problem
Problem Statement
People often find it challenging to consistently practice mindfulness in their daily routines, and struggle to find the time due to their busy schedules. This negatively impacts their mental and physical well-being in the long run.
hMW
How might we incorporate mindfulness practices into daily activities like walking and coffee/tea drinking in a time-efficient way, while also encouraging users to engage in these practices consistently?
GOALS
🚶‍♀️Encourage an efficient lifestyle and better well-being
Offer various meditation practices that can be integrated into daily tasks, without the need of extra time.
☕️ Link mobile app with the Mind Coffee Cafe
Creating an engaging user experience by connecting the meditation practices with redeemable rewards at the Mind Coffee Cafe.
Secondary Research
Understanding competitors
📑 Conducted Research on our direct and indirect competitors and explored their features, resources, and costs. From this data, competitive analysis charts were drawn.
🎯 Our goal is to place MIND coffee in the MORE features and LESS cost spectrum
Primary Research
USER RESEARCH
👥 Gathered insights from a diverse group of around 40 people, mostly students in UC Berkeley.
🌟 From the user surveys, we gained a generalized idea of how users would engage with our app and got a glimpse of features that caught their interest.
USER INTERVIEWS
👫🏻 Based on their responses, we categorized the participants as beginners or experienced, to explore how we can best support users at both levels.
KEY INSIGHTS
‼️ What did we uncover?
💵 Many users prefer free apps and avoid paying for additional resources: An interviewee stated that he’s “very unhappy about the price”. This created an opportunity for Mind Coffee to offer cost-efficient and valuable content for our users
🧘‍♀️ Most common mindfulness practices were self reflection, taking breaks, yoga, meditation
📱 Research shows that while most individuals have never used a mindfulness app, they are interested in unique features and connecting with friends,  as their loved ones are their main support system in difficult times
User Flow
User Flow
The three key features derived from the research were implemented to create an intuitive user flow.

Original Project
Reflections
Final thoughts
This was the first UX Design Project that I worked on with a project team through UX@Berkeley, as well as my first contract work. After completing the initial project with my team, I revisited it later independently in order to create an improved redesign.
REDESIGN
👩🏻 Working by myself
While I enjoyed my creative freedom, I also found some challenges of working by myself and took longer than expected. I kept overthinking about the design and found it challenging at times, especially because I couldn’t ask a teammate for their input on it. However, I believe that the results were really rewarding and I improved along the way.
💡 For the Redesign, I focused on:
Overall functionality of the app
Modifying Value propositions on why the user should use our product
UI - Color and layout modifications
Improved User Flow and Prototype
More visible Call-to-action buttons for better usability
initial experiEnce
✒️ Learned a lot about Design Principles
Before this project, I had never experienced the full Product design framework from start to finish. I’ve only ever studied Figma and learned to create interfaces. Going through the whole process helped me understand the importance of creating a product step-by-step. I also gained a deeper understanding of Figma and design elements starting from proper sizing,  luminosity contrast ratio, and the proper use of auto layout to create a responsive design. This project taught me how to empathize with users and design with functionality rather than just purely aesthetics.
👯♂️ Teamwork
This project was a valuable learning experience for our team, as most of us were just getting started in UX Design.  One of my best moments was in the ideation phase where we gathered around a whiteboard to sketch ideas – I felt surrounded by creative energy and had a fun time. Sometimes, we struggle with minor communication issues and clash of ideas due to a group of 5, and in tough situations, I found myself stepping up to take initiative so we are on track. Through this experience, I gained insights on team dynamics, and also discovered my own role within a collaborative setting.
